You may have heard my interview with the beautiful and talented Paulette Edwards on BBC Radio Sheffield on Monday morning - if not, you can listen here at 14:10…
Paulette Edwards 23/05/2023 BBC Radio Sheffield
As I explained to Paulette, our Newsletter will be a new channel to connection… and this is an example of that in action - here's the idea... we choose a random location in Sheffield, and an agreeable time, travel through Sheffield taking photos along the way, then post the highlights here and more pics with a route map to our Love Sheffield Newsletter. This morning I did a dry run/jog/walk through of this idea… choosing Dukes Cafe in Norfolk Park at 9am as my goal...
So here’s the route I took this morning from home to the meeting spot, where I had a lonely bottle of water lol (I did say a dry run)… before walking / jogging home.
And here are some of the photos I took along the way - I’ve added the location under each photo. What I would love, is for you to comment with ideas of your favourite locations for a meetup - all ideas welcome - it doesn’t have to be for a coffee - you may know of a good rock climbing wall for a fun experience lol, just please bear in mind that budgets can be very squeezed for some, and we want this to be as low stress and inclusive as possible for everyone, including for those of us using wheel chairs / prams. Maybe we could organise a group picnic and bring kids for some events?
Hillsborough park, this is where we do the Hillsborough Park Run every Saturday morning - if you are very slow, or nervous about doing this on your own, drop me a message and I’ll be happy to jog alongside you for moral support and a chat!
New Barrack Tavern - I don’t think I’ve ever been in this pub (not that I’ve been in many! too busy working away from home to socialise locally as you may know)… but it looks from the website to be a friendly, family run pub.
I decided to walk past Glyn Rhodes (MBE) Sheffield Boxing Centre - I haven’t met Glyn in person yet, but we’re facebook friends and he’s now a subscriber to this newsletter… his occasional ‘SBC TV’ videos posted on his FB profile are brilliant, they tell so much about the way he builds kids up and he’s clearly doing superb work. Maybe we can get a profile together to share just what a difference he makes with his team in his community. I suspect it will be very inspiring.
Arts Tower viewed from Shalesmoor - I love how the scale of this building makes it a friendly landmark for miles around.
Absolutely love the Grey to Green initiative - planting wild flowers in the Castlegate area - I really do hope this spreads throughout the city.
Continuing my walk / jog I approached the Park Square, walking alongside the Supertram. This is a fun bridge to walk over.
I decided to walk past the Cholera Monument - and through Clay Wood, such a beautiful setting.
And a great view of some iconic buildings in town.
Norfolk Part, and apparently (according to our friend Joanne Louise Miller who lives nearby) this is Millie, the one eyed Jack Russell that lives in one of the cottages facing the monument ..she’s a right little character.
Walking home past Park Hill flats, great to see this being developed.
A good view of the new development in Pond Street.
One of my last pics on the way home, the National Emergency Services Museum with a street sculpture in the foreground.
And that’s all folks! I hope you enjoyed the scenery from this morning… It’s amazing to think that life goes on in all these places every day across our beautiful city - there’s so much more to see and share!
Please help us by commenting on this idea - where would you like to see a meetup happen, perhaps convenient for yourself to pop along for a chat in person?
Sounds like great idea. QHow often you planning to do this? Is it going to be on weekends? Did you get many come to the first one?
Fabulous picture.
Lovely read. Thanks
