And if you muster the courage to share something, the instant buzz from each 'like' is intoxicating, isn't it? Or worse, you find yourself embroiled in a late-night squabble with a stranger online, as your so-called 'mates' observe and judge from the sidelines.

Seven years ago, I embarked on a personal venture of creative exploration, an experiment to harness Facebook's staggering reach to foster deeper connections among people on every conceivable level. It's felt like wading through muck to reach a pristine shore, but we've carved out a tranquil, intimate haven within private Facebook groups for our friends and family to celebrate our beautiful city and uphold our shared human values of kindness, compassion and creativity.
