Sixteen years ago, as a lifelong enthusiastic photographer, I brought together hundreds of photographers worldwide to form an Olympus Photo Safari group - I organised a series of ‘safaris’ across the UK to help friends connect around our passion for photography, to learn together.
This culminated in an exhibition of photographs and even a book which is still on blurb and in my bookcase at home… I made some lifelong friends there, including Hathersage based landscape photographer, Stephen Elliott, who still regularly graces my Facebook feed!
In those early days, I came across an absolutely insane online photographic resource - Phil Douglis’ Expressive Travel Photography.
Today, I’d like to bring friends together from our Love Sheffield community, to learn, practice and share how to connect more deeply and thoughtfully with our beautiful city, and to express how we feel about our world creatively.
This will be in the form of a free course which will be flexible and inclusive - we will meet weekly in person, both centrally at the 1554 Cafe in the Cathedral each Saturday at 2pm, and locally around the city in small groups as you wish to organise yourselves.
We will host the course on Maven - join our Love Sheffield Originals group for details of how to make the most of Maven, but here’s why I’m encouraging all of our friends to join us there in addition to our Facebook groups.
What’s so special about Maven?
I've recently discovered a new social platform called Maven that I believe could greatly enrich our community. Maven is designed to foster meaningful conversations and connections based on shared interests, without the noise and pressure of traditional social media.
Here are a few key benefits of Maven:
Explore diverse perspectives: Maven allows us to tap into the collective wisdom of our community and beyond, exposing us to new ideas and experiences that can broaden our understanding of the world and each other.
Connect with purpose: By creating conversation starters about topics we truly care about, we can attract like-minded individuals who share our passions and concerns, leading to more fulfilling interactions and potential collaborations.
Nurture compassion and agency: Maven encourages us to engage with empathy and to take an active role in shaping our conversations and communities, fostering a greater sense of connection and empowerment.
I believe that Maven could be a powerful tool for strengthening the bonds within our Love Sheffield community and helping us grow together. I invite you to explore Maven for yourself and see how it might enrich your own journey of connection and growth.
Please join our Love Sheffield Originals group to join our free photography course today… you can use anything from a smartphone to a DSLR, it’s not about the equipment, it’s about seeing, expressing and connecting - so complete novice to professional photographers - if you’re open to learning - this is for you!
I’d love to join, but at the moment it’s ’One More thing’ too many.
